Asian Mothers’ perceptions about children’s nutritional milk products

August 2021

Consumers rely on industry to provide safe and effective nutritional products for their children. Asian parents tend to be more sensitive to their infants’ and children’s nutritional needs. This may be based on an awareness of the health consequences of undernutrition, especially in developing countries.

UNICEF estimates that 31.5% of children under 5 in ASEAN countries are affected by growth stunting, while 38% suffer from anemia[1]. These are problems caused by undernutrition or an absence of key nutrients in the diet. Meanwhile, overnutrition is on the rise, and although it is a sign of emerging economic prosperity, it quite often means more empty calories and less nutrient value.

One assumption is that Asian parents want their children to grow up strong and smart, so they see infant and children’s nutrient milk products as a convenient way of providing all the essential nutrients to support physical and intellectual development.

Introducing Solids Safely: 4 Dietitian Tips

20th July 2020

Introducing solids to your little one is an exciting, but scary time. Your little one is growing up! Obviously, great nutrition is essential, but what else do you need to consider to ensure solids are introduced safely? Consider these 4 tips…

1. Minimise choking risks – Until your baby is competent at chewing their food, it’s safest to provide them with pureed foods, or foods cut up to a size smaller than a pea. Try these tips:

  • Ensure that your child sits quietly and concentrates while they eat instead of running around or lying down;
  • Cook, grate or mash hard foods such as carrots and apples until your child can chew them;
  • Cut grapes and cherry tomatoes into halves or quarters so that your baby doesn’t choke on the skin;
  • Undertake a First Aid and CPR course so that you know how to treat your baby if they do choke.
